The Institution

The Society of Wine Educators (SWE) was founded 1974 in USA with a mission to advance wine and spirits education through professional development and certification. SWE offers professional credentials for those seeking to certify their industry knowledge by an independent organization measured against current industry standards, which are internationally recognized.


The Certification

The Certified Specialist of Spirits (CSS) is an international certification which tests a candidate's spirits knowledge and mastery of key elements within the world of distillation and spirits production. A rigorous exam, the CSS recognizes the core achievement in having mastered the fundamentals of fermentation and distillation of all major spirits types and categories, combining history, production techniques and distinguishing characteristics of style and terroir that makes each spirit unique.


This certification is widely recognized and regarded by the international wine and spirits industry. Successful candidates are entitled to add the appropriate post-nominal to their vocational signature, a valuable credential and respected mark of a spirits professional’s commitment to personal career development and ultimately to the spirits industry as a whole.

The Program

The body of knowledge required to successfully pass the CSS exam is detailed in the Certified Specialist of Spirits Book and Study Guide, that presents the fundamentals which all spirits professionals should be familiar with. Information is conveyed in a comprehensive, practical format and is designed to help participants gain a greater understanding of the complex world of spirits.


The Exam

The Certified Specialist of Spirits examination is a comprehensive test within a 60-minute time frame. Test questions are based on the content of the Study Guide itself. Certification is awarded to those candidates who answer at least 75 percent of the questions correctly. Successful candidates will receive a Certificate upon completion, a CSS lapel pin and the right to use the post-nominal CSS as part of their professional title.
