The Institution

The Society of Wine Educators (SWE) was founded 1974 in USA with a mission to advance wine education through professional development and certification. SWE offers professional credentials for those seeking to certify their wine knowledge by an independent organization measured against current industry standards, which are internationally recognized.


The Certification

The Certified Specialist of Wine (CSW) is an international certification offered by the Society of Wine Educators. It recognizes a high standard of academic wine knowledge and the mastery of key elements within the world of wine via this comprehensive program. Successful candidates are entitled to add the appropriate post-nominal to their vocational signature, a valuable credential and respected mark of a wine professional’s commitment to personal career development and ultimately to the wine industry as a whole. The CSW also serves as the prerequisite for those wishing to pursue the Certified Wine Educator certification. There are no exceptions to this rule, regardless of a candidate's background or other credentials.

Certificate holders, also have the option to be listed on the SWE website, which maintains a pool of qualified educators and offers other resources. The Program

The body of knowledge required to successfully pass the CSW exam is detailed in the Certified Specialist of Wine Book and Study Guide, that presents the fundamentals which all wine professionals should be familiar with. Information is conveyed in a comprehensive, practical format and is designed to help participants gain a greater understanding of the complex world of wine.


The Exam

The Certified Specialist of Wine examination is a comprehensive test within a 60-minute time frame. Test questions are based on the content of the Study Guide itself. Certification is awarded to those candidates who answer at least 75 percent of the questions correctly. Successful candidates will receive a Certificate upon completion, a CSW lapel pin and the right to use the post-nominal CSW as part of their professional title.
